When sinus augmentation is needed
When there is not enough bone in the jaw near the sinus cavity, a dental implant cannot be placed without grafting. This situation may arise for a number of reasons, including:
- Bone damage caused by advanced periodontal disease
- Bone resorption due to missing teeth
- Insufficient room between the jaw and the maxillary cavity
- Naturally small or low density bone in the upper jaw
What to expect from the procedure
Sinus augmentation, also called a sinus lift, is a straightforward surgery that raises the sinus floor and develops optimal bone structure for implant placement. Many patients are surprised to discover that the procedure and recovery period are quite comfortable.
We begin with completely numbing the area. Your dentist then creates a very small opening to expose the sinus membrane. The membrane is gently lifted to its optimal location and bone grafting material is put in place. At the same time, the implant is inserted, allowing the bone to heal around it. The gum tissue is closed around the implant and grafting material.
